Jelly fish in the harbor at Monterey
Mucho Gusto at the yacht club dock in Monterey

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Forgot to tell you about the pod of Orcas yesterday, but today it didn't stop dolphins everywhere as we arrived at Monterey. Seals and huge jelly fish everywhere.
Whales were crossing our path for a few hours of the four hour trip across the bay from Santa Cruz to Monterey. This picture is three that passed behind us, you can just see the tail splashing from the one behind the front one.

Anne avoiding crab traps, flat water after a morning of 20+ knots and 8kts of boat speed
Finally wearing San Francisco summer sailing wear.
The cat was a little seasick today but was happy to get out of the boat and check out Santa Cruz Harbor

Spend the day today doing jobs that should have been done before we left. Like hanging the dingy properly. Came out pretty well. Cleaned up a few other things and finished mounting somethings in the boat. Next stop Santa Cruz.

Halfmoon Bay welcoming committee.

Send off From the St Francis

Friends stopped by to see us off at the St Francis. Brought bagels and all the fixings, the cat came alive as he smelled cheese

Here is Anne driving as we leave the Golden Gate in the background, see you in 6 months, maybe. And yes it is still cold. Next stop Halfmoon Bay to pick up some crab. As I am typing this Anne is dodging crab floats and dolphins are around the boat. The earlier morning was mostly seals.

Well, we finally left the house. The hardest part of the trip. Leaving your home on an extended voyage is really hard for most people. You are never really ready, at some point you just go.
We really froze today. It was very cold and windy.
Interesting comment as we were approaching the Martinez railroad bridge.
The bridge operator said after I called him on the radio," yes I see you the white sailboat heading south. Well the water there runs east and west, I wondered why he would say that.
He has trains running perpendicular the the water way all day that are the east and west bound Amtrak trains, hence his orientation is a little skewed.

Dinner at the St Francis was good and we are glad we went in. Came out to a warm boat, the new heater is going to get some use at least till we get to Mexico.
